Perbadanan Kemajuan Filem Nasional Malaysia (FINAS) was established in 1981 through the Akta Perbadanan Kemajuan Filem Nasional Malaysia 1981 (1984 amendments) 244 Act (A589 Amendments Act). FINAS went into operation on November 1, 1981 under the Kementerian Perdagangan and Perindustrian Malaysia. Beginning of October 16, 1981, FINAS was put under the Kementerian Penerangan. After that, beginning of March 27, 2004, FINAS was put under the Kementerian Kebudayaan, Kesenian dan Warisan (KEKKWA). Beginning April 19,2009, FINAS was later put under the Kementerian Penerangan, Komunikasi dan Kebudayaan (KPKK). On May 15, 2013, FINAS was put under the Kementerian Komunikasidan Multimedia Malaysia.
On April 6, 2012, the Cabinet agreed with the proposal of combining FINAS with the FIlem Negara Malaysia (FNM) which was spearheaded by FINAS.
The agreements with the Cabinet made for amendment under the 244 Act is to incorporate new functions to disseminate information on policies, programs and achievements of the government through the production of film and record events coverage for archive purposes.
The collaboration of FINAS and the Filem Negara Malaysia (FNM) took force on January 1, 2013.
